What is the RICE method?

The RICE method is an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. It is a first aid treatment used to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation from injuries such as sprains, strains, and contusions.

Rest:

Rest the injured area to reduce further damage and allow it to heal. Avoid any activities that put stress on the injured area.

Ice:

Apply an ice pack to the injured area for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. Ice helps to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Compression:

Wrap the injured area with an elastic bandage to help reduce swelling and provide support. Be careful not to wrap the bandage too tightly, as this can restrict blood flow.

Elevation:

Elevate the injured area above the level of the heart to help reduce swelling.

The RICE method should be used for the first 24 to 48 hours after an injury. After that, you can gradually start to move the injured area and apply heat to help with pain relief. If your symptoms do not improve after a few days, you should see a doctor.
