What foods does the chipewyan eat?

Fish: Chipewyans are traditionally skilled fishers, and fish remains the primary source of protein for the community. Whitefish, lake trout, northern pike, inconnu (coney), and walleye are the main fish species consumed.

Hunting: Moose, caribou, and beaver are the main land animals hunted by the Chipewyan. These animals provide meat, hides, and other valuable resources for the community. They also hunt other smaller animals such as rabbits and grouse for food and other uses.

Berries and Plants: Chipewyan traditionally collect and consume a variety of berries and plants native to their region. These include blueberries, raspberries, cranberries, Saskatoon berries, and wild rhubarb. They also use various plants for medicinal and ceremonial purposes.

Traditional Preparation Methods: Chipewyan traditionally prepare their food through methods like smoking, drying, and fermentation. These methods help preserve the food for extended periods in the harsh northern climate. Fish and meat are often smoked over an open fire, and berries are dried in the sun or smoked for storage.

Current Diet: While some Chipewyan continue to rely on traditional food sources, the community's diet has also been influenced by modern foods introduced through trading and contact with other cultures. However, traditional foods still hold significant cultural importance and are incorporated into community events, ceremonies, and gatherings.
