I have some old wine stored. How can tell it is still good?
Here are some ways to tell if old wine is still good:
1. Check the Wine Bottle:
- Look for signs of spoilage, such as leaks, cracks, or bulging corks, which could indicate that the wine has been exposed to air.
-Inspect the fill level to ensure the wine has not oxidized or evaporated significantly.
2. Examine the Wine:
- Look for any changes in color, clarity, and consistency, such as cloudiness, sediment, or discoloration.
- Swirl the wine gently and observe its viscosity. Old wine may appear thinner or less viscous due to the breakdown of compounds with age.
3. Smell the Wine:
- Take a deep whiff of the wine. Old wines may develop complex aromas, but off-putting smells, such as vinegar (acetic acid), mustiness (cork taint), or wet cardboard, can indicate spoilage.
4. Taste the Wine:
- Take a sip and pay attention to the flavors and textures. Look for any bitterness, sourness, or excessive dryness, which could be signs of spoilage.
- Consider the wine's overall balance, complexity, and depth.
5. Trust Your Senses:
- Trust your palate. If the wine tastes or smells "off" to you, it's better to err on the side of caution and discard it.
Remember that wine can evolve and change over time, and some wines are meant to age and develop complex flavors. Ultimately, the best way to determine if an old wine is still good is to open and taste it.
