How to Make Oyster Stew (9 Steps)

Things You'll Need

  • 1 pint oysters
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 3 tbsp. vegetable shorting
  • Sauce pan
  • 1 quart milk
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • Large soup bowl
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1 tsp. parsley

Instructions

  1. Remove the oysters from their shells. Check each oyster for small shell pieces.

  2. Chop the onion and celery into small cubes.

  3. Melt vegetable shortening in a sauce pan over high heat.

  4. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the oysters and their juices to the melted shortening. Stir the contents while adding the onion and celery.

  5. Cook until the edges of the oysters began to curl up. This usually takes about 3 minutes.

  6. Add the milk, salt and cream of mushroom soup to the oysters. Stir occasionally while continuing to cook over medium heat.

  7. Bring the stew to a boil.

  8. Remove from heat and pour into soup bowls.

  9. Sprinkle parsley and paprika on the top.
