How to Prepare Live Shrimp (4 Steps)
Cooking live shrimp requires boiling shrimp whole without deveining it first. This is an Asian culinary technique used to create dishes such as drunken shrimp. The heads, antennae and shells of the shrimp are still attached once cooked, which creates a unique presentation for a seafood dish. Eating whole shrimp requires removing the head and peeling off the shell and tail. Some choose to suck the juices from the head for added flavor.
Things You'll Need
- Colander
- Tall pot
- Dipping sauces (optional)
Instructions
-
Place the shrimp in a colander and rinse them with cold water to remove debris and bacteria.
-
Bring a tall pot of water to a boil. Add 1 tbsp. of salt and 1 tbsp. of desired herbs or spices such as ginger to add flavor. Squeeze a lemon or pour olive oil into the pot, if desired.
-
Pour the live shrimp into the boiling water. Place a cover on the pot. Boil the shrimp for about five minutes until pink.
-
Drain the shrimp into a colander to remove excess water. Serve with dipping sauces and a side bowl for placing the removed shells, tails and heads.
