What is poultry inspection?

Poultry inspection is the process of inspecting poultry and their products to ensure they are safe for human consumption. Inspection typically occurs at slaughterhouses and processing plants and often includes checks for diseases, injuries, and contamination. USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is responsible for implementing poultry inspection policies, and their inspectors visit over 6,000 processing plants nationwide daily. These inspectors may conduct tests and samples, review records, and take direct action whenever any evidence suggests disease or contamination concerns in any poultry or poultry product.
