How to Freeze Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Summer is the best time to make batches of homemade spaghetti sauce using tomatoes fresh from your garden or those that were on sale at the grocery store. By freezing your own spaghetti sauce at harvest time, you can enjoy that fresh summer flavor in the middle of winter. Season your sauce lightly because you'll probably want to season it again after you thaw it.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring cup
  • Quart-size zip-top freezer bags or plastic containers

Instructions

  1. Allow the sauce to cool to room temperature.

  2. Ladle the sauce into the quart-size zip-top bags with a measuring cup. Fill the bag as close to the top as possible, gently pushing any air out, and then zip it shut. If you're using containers, fill each container to 1/4 inch from the top and seal it carefully.

  3. Label each bag or container with the name of the sauce and the date.

  4. Lay each bag of sauce flat in the freezer until it is frozen. After that, the bags can be stacked in the freezer. Stacking the bags before they are frozen can cause them to stick together. Place containers right side up while they freeze.
