How to Make Southern-Style Spaghetti (13 Steps)

In the south, it is not uncommon to cook large meals in order to promote family bonding. Many families gather at the home of a loved one to enjoy a meal together after church on Sunday. When you have a large family or expecting dinner guests, spaghetti is an excellent way to satisfy everyone. For someone who is not Italian, cooking a delicious spaghetti dinner may appear challenging. It's not. By using a few store-bought ingredients and adding some extra seasonings, a regular spaghetti meal can transform into a dinner that your friends request often.

Things You'll Need

  • Stockpot
  • Water
  • 16 oz. spaghetti
  • Butter
  • Ground beef (or ground chuck)
  • Onion soup mix
  • 2 cans Traditional Hunt's spaghetti sauce
  • Sugar

Instructions

  1. Fill a stockpot with water. Place the pot on the stove and set the heat dial to “High.”

  2. Place 16 oz. of spaghetti into the water once it begins to boil. Lower the heat to “Medium High”.

  3. Place 1 tbsp. of butter into the stockpot. This will prevent the noodles from sticking together and will add a subtle butter taste to the cooked pasta.

  4. Brown the ground beef in a skillet. The amount of ground beef used will depend on your family. Some families prefer more meat while others prefer more pasta. The average amount of ground beef to use is 1 lb. to 2 lbs.

  5. Drain the oil from the cooked ground beef and return the beef to the stove.

  6. Stir one package of onion soup mix into the ground beef.

  7. Remove the ground beef from the heat. This will keep the meat from overcooking.

  8. Drain the water from the pasta once the noodles are cooked. Spaghetti noodles take about 10 minutes to cook once they are placed in the boiling water. Cooked pasta will be the size of an ink tube that is located inside a pen. Taste test the pasta to confirm that it is done.

  9. Turn the heat off the stockpot.

  10. Open two cans of spaghetti sauce and pour into the cooked pasta.

  11. Place the cooked ground beef into the stockpot with the pasta and sauce.

  12. Pour 4 tbsp. of sugar into the stockpot. Stir the pasta, ground beef, sauce and sugar together until everything is covered.

  13. Allow the spaghetti to sit for 5 to 10 minutes to warm the sauce. Serve.
