1. Mix the ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder (if using), and Worcestershire sauce (if using).
2. Gently combine: Use your hands to gently mix the ingredients until they are just combined. Do not overmix, as this can make the patties tough.
3. Shape the patties: Divide the beef mixture into equal portions (about 4 ounces each for a standard hamburger patty). Shape each portion into a patty, about 1/2 inch thick.
4. Make a slight indentation: Use your thumb to make a slight indentation in the center of each patty. This will help prevent the patties from puffing up in the middle during cooking.
5. Refrigerate (optional): If you have time, refrigerate the patties for 30 minutes before cooking. This will help them hold their shape better.
6. Cook the patties: Cook the patties over medium heat in a skillet or on a grill. Cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
7. Rest: Once cooked, let the patties rest for a few minutes before serving. This will allow the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more juicy burger.
