How to Use Baking Soda on Barbecue Grills (4 Steps)
Baking soda has other uses besides its common role as a kitchen ingredient. You also need it around your barbecue pit for cleaning and as a backup fire extinguisher. Cleaning your grill with baking soda allows you to save money while taking advantage of a nontoxic cleaning option. Baking soda's many uses should encourage you to keep a box in your pantry.
Things You'll Need
- Baking soda
- Water
- Bowl
- Spoon
- Sponge
- Wire scrubbing brush
- Towel
Instructions
-
Keep a box of baking soda next to your grill if you lack a fire extinguisher. In the event of a flare-up, remove the food off the grill. Cover the flames with baking soda to smother the fire.
-
Clean your grill grates after every use to prevent buildup. Wait for the grates to cool enough to handle. Run a sponge under water to lightly dampen it. Sprinkle dry baking soda over the sponge as a scouring powder. Run the sponge over both sides of the grill grates to remove dirt and oils. Rinse the baking soda and residue away with water.
-
Remove tough, baked-on grit from the grill grates by combining 3 parts of baking soda with 1 part water. For example, mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1/3 cup of water to create a thick paste. Dip a wire scrub brush into this paste and scrub the grates of the grill after they have cooled.
-
Clean the exterior stainless steel and chrome components of your grill with baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda onto a damp sponge and gently rub over the exterior surfaces to improve shine. Rinse with water and dry with a soft towel to prevent spotting.
