How do you convert a natural gas stove to propane?
Tools and materials:
- Adjustable wrench
- Pipe wrench
- Propane conversion kit
- Propane tank
- Propane regulator
- Propane hose
- Safety goggles
- Gloves
Instructions:
1. Turn off the gas supply to the stove. Locate the gas valve on the stove, usually near the bottom of the appliance. Turn the valve to the "Off" position.
2. Disconnect the gas line from the stove. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that connect the gas line to the stove. Be careful not to damage the gas line.
3. Remove the orifices from the stove burners. The orifices are small brass screws located in the center of each burner. Use a screwdriver to remove the orifices.
4. Install the propane conversion kit orifices. The propane conversion kit will come with new orifices that are sized for propane gas. Install the new orifices by screwing them into the burner holes.
5. Reconnect the gas line to the stove. Hand-tighten the nuts that connect the gas line to the stove. Then, use an adjustable wrench to tighten the nuts until they are snug.
6. Turn on the gas supply to the stove. Turn the gas valve to the "On" position.
7. Connect the propane tank to the regulator. Hand-tighten the coupling nut that connects the propane tank to the regulator. Then, use a wrench to tighten the coupling nut until it is snug.
8. Connect the regulator to the propane hose. Hand-tighten the coupling nut that connects the regulator to the propane hose. Then, use a wrench to tighten the coupling nut until it is snug.
9. Connect the propane hose to the stove. Hand-tighten the coupling nut that connects the propane hose to the stove. Then, use a wrench to tighten the coupling nut until it is snug.
10. Leak-check the connections. Use soapy water to check for leaks around the gas connections. If you see any bubbles, tighten the connection until the leak stops.
11. Ignite the stove's burners. Turn the burner knobs to the "On" position and ignite the burners using a match or lighter.
12. Adjust the flame. Once the burners are ignited, adjust the flame height to medium-high. The flame should be approximately 1 inch in length. Turn all burners on high and check the flame. If the flame is not blue and the tips of the flame are yellow or orange, the air/gas mixture in the stove is not correct. Refer to your user manual for instructions on how to adjust the mixture.
13. Allow the stove to cool down. Once you have finished cooking, turn off the burners and allow the stove to cool down completely before moving or cleaning it.
Tips:
- When converting a natural gas stove to propane, it is important to use a propane conversion kit that is specifically designed for your stove model.
- If you are not comfortable converting a natural gas stove to propane yourself, you can call a qualified appliance repair technician to do it for you.
