Can a chicken lay eggs when they are pregnant with chick?

Chickens don't get pregnant in the way mammals do. They lay eggs whether or not they've been fertilized.

Here's the breakdown:

* Chickens are oviparous: This means they lay eggs.

* Fertilization happens inside the egg: A rooster's sperm fertilizes an egg inside the hen's body before the egg is laid.

* Unfertilized eggs are still laid: Even if a hen hasn't mated with a rooster, she will still lay eggs. These eggs are simply not fertile and won't hatch.

So, a hen can lay an egg while she's incubating fertilized eggs (or chicks!), but she's not "pregnant" in the traditional sense.
