How to Microwave Chicken Drumsticks (6 Steps)

Chicken drumsticks can be prepared in a variety of ways, but microwaving them will save you time. You can flavor the chicken with your preferred spices or coat it with your favorite coating or sauce. When you cook chicken in the microwave, the internal temperature needs to be monitored carefully because a microwave oven will cook the chicken unevenly.

Things You'll Need

  • Microwave safe glass dish
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • Spices
  • Plastic wrap
  • Meat thermometer

Instructions

  1. Place the chicken drumsticks in a glass dish that's microwave safe. Place the thicker part of the drumsticks so that they point toward the outside of the dish. The thin part should face inside the glass dish.

  2. Spread 3/4 cup of buttermilk over the chicken. Sprinkle the drumsticks with whatever spices you wish.

  3. Cover the drumsticks with plastic wrap, then cook them on medium-high heat for 3 minutes.

  4. Check the temperature of the drumsticks--the U.S. Department of Agriculture says they need to reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit--then cook the chicken for an additional 2 minutes. Turn over the chicken and check the temperature again.

  5. Place the thermometer in several parts of each chicken drumstick because a microwave oven will cook the chicken unevenly. Continue to microwave the drumsticks for intervals of 2 to 3 minutes until the chicken reaches a safe internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

  6. Discard the buttermilk after you finish cooking the drumsticks. Allow the chicken to stand for 10 minutes before you serve it--remember that the chicken will continue to cook after you remove it from the microwave.
