Beka Lamb is an outspoken student on her way to becoming a diplomat; who is an avid fan of the romance novels written by George Templeton. Despite her father being a Lord, Beka is known to use her fists against injustice and is quite adept with a slingshot.

She is a young novice diplomant trying to prove her worth at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the city-state of Lormere, and she is currently assigned as a messenger. Although she is intelligent, strong and brave, her rash actions often get her into trouble and earn her the ire of her superior, the Earl of Arland, the head of the ministry. She frequently finds herself in dangerous situations, but she always manages to escape unharmed, often with the help of her friends, the street urchin Tunstall, and the handsome soldier Prince Alberich of Keln, to whom she is betrothed and secretly in love with.
