How do you measure a dry weight organism?
Materials needed:
- Analytical balance
- Desiccator
- Weighing paper
- Drying oven
Procedure:
1. Label a piece of weighing paper with the organism's name and date.
2. Place the organism on the weighing paper and weigh it on the analytical balance. Record the weight.
3. Place the weighing paper and the organism in the drying oven at 60°C for 24-48 hours.
4. Remove the weighing paper and organism from the drying oven and place it in the desiccator to cool.
5. Once cooled, weigh the weighing paper and the organism again on the analytical balance. Record the weight.
Calculations:
The dry weight of the organism is calculated by subtracting the weight of the weighing paper from the total weight of the organism and the weighing paper.
$$ Dry \space weight= Total \space weight \space - \space Weighing \space paper \space weight $$
