How do you sift sugar without a sifter?
1. Pour the sugar into a fine-mesh strainer or colander. Use a spoon to stir the sugar continuously in a rubbing motion. The fine granules of sugar will pass through the mesh, while the larger lumps will remain in the colander.
2. A similar method involves using a fork instead of a spoon. Insert the fork vertically into the sugar and twirl it around, breaking up any clumps. Gently tap the sides of the colander with the fork to encourage the sugar to pass through the mesh.
3. If you don't have a strainer or colander, you can also use a clean piece of cheesecloth or a coffee filter as a makeshift sifter. Place the cheesecloth or coffee filter over a bowl, pour the sugar onto the cloth, and use a spoon to gently stir or pat the sugar through.
