What canu substitute for cornstarch?
Flour
All-purpose flour can be used as a thickener in place of cornstarch in most recipes. Use twice as much flour as you would cornstarch. For example, if a recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, use 2 tablespoons of flour.
Arrowroot
Arrowroot is a starch that is extracted from the root of the arrowroot plant. It is a good substitute for cornstarch because it has a similar thickening power and does not have a strong flavor. Use arrowroot in equal amounts to cornstarch.
Tapioca
Tapioca is a starch that is extracted from the cassava root. It is a good substitute for cornstarch because it has a similar thickening power and is also gluten-free. Use tapioca in equal amounts to cornstarch.
Potato starch
Potato starch is a starch that is extracted from potatoes. It is a good substitute for cornstarch because it has a similar thickening power and is also gluten-free. Use potato starch in equal amounts to cornstarch.
Xanthan gum
Xanthan gum is a polysaccharide that is used as a thickening agent in many foods. It is gluten-free. Use xanthan gum in small amounts; as little as 1/4 teaspoon can thicken a cup of liquid. This makes xanthan gum an expensive cornstarch substitute because of the larger amount of cornstarch in a typical substitution.
When adding an alternative thickener always add at least a one-fourth a cup of the liquid component of the recipe to create a well blended slurry as these other alternatives do not readily dissolve by sprinkling into a pot, but need to be blended in well until they swell and disperse through the liquid first
Remember this substitution advice might not always guarantee you with results of the original ingredient in many foods as cornstarch provides bulk in addition to acting as a gel in the finished recipes
