Why does sugar cure of hiccups?
Sugar does not actually cure hiccups. Although there are many folk remedies that suggest consuming a spoonful of sugar can stop hiccups, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. Hiccups are caused by involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, and while certain techniques such as holding one's breath or drinking water may help alleviate hiccups, the effectiveness of sugar as a remedy has not been scientifically demonstrated.
