Why should you not throw chewing gum on the ground?
Chewing gum should not be thrown on the ground because:
- Gum can take years to decompose. In comparison to other types of waste, gum does not break down easily. Gum is composed of a number of synthetic materials, including polymers, resins, and waxes. These materials often take several years to biodegrade, and some may even persist in the environment for centuries.
- Gum can be a hazard to animals. Animals might eat gum, mistaking it for food, which can lead to choking or other health problems. Gum can also stick to animals' fur or feathers and cause discomfort or injury. In addition, gum may accumulate in animals' digestive systems and lead to malnutrition or starvation.
- Gum is unsightly and can deface public areas. Chewing gum stuck on sidewalks, benches, and other surfaces is not only unsightly but also difficult to remove. Gum can also attract dirt and other debris, which makes it even more unsightly.
- Gum can clog drains and cause plumbing problems. Chewing gum can clog drains and pipes if it is flushed down the toilet or disposed of improperly. This can lead to expensive plumbing problems, including backed up drains and even flooding.
- Gum can contaminate soil and water. When chewing gum is thrown on the ground, it can leach harmful chemicals into the soil and water. This can contaminate both drinking water supplies and ecosystems.
- Gum can be a litter problem. Chewing gum thrown on the ground contributes to litter problems, making public areas look messy and unpleasant.
