Substitutes for Espresso Coffee
Espresso is a popular coffee beverage noted for its thick consistency, rich color, bold flavor and high concentration of caffeine. Espresso is enjoyed in pure form and as the base of such drinks as cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and macchiatos, but it is also a common ingredient in baking. If a recipe calls for espresso powder and you do not have any, a number of alternatives will add a kick of coffee flavor to your favorite cookies, brownies and cakes.
Instant Coffee
-
Select a dark roast coffee and substitute double the amount of instant coffee granules for the amount of espresso powder used in the recipe. Increase the amount of granules for a richer flavor, depending on your taste preference.
Coffee Liqueur
-
Liqueurs such as Kahlua and Tia Maria are noncaffeinated alternatives when making desserts. Substitute 2 tbsp. of liqueur for every teaspoon of espresso powder.
Coffee Extract
-
Substitute one serving of espresso powder with 1 1/2 tsp. of coffee extract. Pure extract derives from roasted coffee beans. Extract produces an intense coffee flavor and provides a nonalcoholic alternative.
Coffee Syrup
-
Replace one serving of espresso powder with 1/4 cup of coffee syrup. Adjust the amount according to taste. Coffee syrups come in a variety of flavors, including vanilla, amaretto and Irish cream, and are also available in sugar-free form.
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
-
Replace one serving of espresso powder with an equal amount of unsweetened cocoa powder when you need a quick fix. Although cocoa powder isn't an exact match, the flavor is similar and it adds a chocolate punch.
