What Are the Differences in an Espresso, Frappuccino and Mocha?
Going to your favorite local coffee shop presents an array of options, as well as an array of confusion. It's not just a simple cup of coffee that is offered any more. Menus are flooded with espresso, frappuccinos, mochas and a plethora of other fancy caffeinated beverages.
Composition
-
An espresso is a strong shot of coffee made under high pressure. A mocha is made of espresso, but also has steamed milk and chocolate in it, and sometimes whipped cream. A frappuccino has nothing to do with espresso. This drink is made out of coffee blended with ice to create a frosty beverage. Some frappuccinos may be made with mocha instead of coffee.
Variations
-
Mocha can be used to make other sorts of drinks, such as a frappuccino or drinks with different flavors of mocha, such as a white mocha. Espresso is present in other standard coffee shop products, such as lattes and cappuccinos. Frappuccinos tend to come in an array of flavors. Some popular blends include caramel frappuccinos and frappuccinos with chocolate chips in them.
Sizes
-
The size of these beverages is most important in terms of the espresso. If you get one shot of espresso, you should expect a very tiny cup. Therefore, people often order a double or triple shot of espresso, or they ask the coffee shop to add a shot or more of espresso to another type of drink that they have ordered. Mochas and frappuccinos are generally available in whatever size cups the shop has to offer.
Hot or Cold
-
Frappuccinos are always served cold. While a pure mocha or a pure espresso is going to be hot, a shot of either of these substances can be added to an iced beverage.
