How to Sugar Rimmed Martini Glasses

A finely crafted cocktail is not just about its preparation; its presentation is equally important. One important detail that is both visual and integral to a martini is a sugar-rimmed glass. In addition to giving the drink a frosted look, it allows the drinker to decide the sweetness of her own drink. Learning to rim your own martini glass with sugar allows you to create you own high-caliber cocktails at home.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 bread plates or medium-sized plates
  • 1 to 2 oz. sweetened lime juice or simple syrup
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Pour the sugar onto one of the bread plates. Shake the bread plate gently for the sugar to spread out over the plate.

  2. Pour the sweetened lime juice or simple syrup onto the other plate, and rotate it gently from side to side. Tip the plate slightly in a couple of different directions for the liquid to cover a large area of the plate.

  3. Place the martini glass upside down on the plate with liquid, and rotate it gently from side to side. If the plate isn't large enough for the entire glass, then hold the martini glass by its stem and rotate the length of the entire rim through the liquid.

  4. Shake the glass gently to remove any excess sugar. Place the glass right side up for later use.
