How to Make a Cilantro Margarita

A few sprigs of fresh cilantro put a new spin on the classic margarita. Cilantro's herbaceous, slightly peppery flavor marries well with buttery tequila, zesty lime juice and orange liqueur. For best results, use tequila made from 100-percent agave, such as blanco or reposado. You can easily make yourself a single serving to sip on your own or prepare a big pitcher to share with friends. For a fiery kick, try garnishing the glass with thinly sliced hot peppers, such as serrano or jalapeno.

Things You'll Need

  • Tequila
  • Orange liqueur, such as triple sec
  • Lime juice
  • Simple syrup (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro
  • Cocktail shaker or pitcher
  • Ice
  • Salt or sugar

Instructions

  1. Measure out 2 parts tequila, 1 part orange liqueur and 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice. If you wish, you may use 1/2-part simple syrup to sweeten the drink.

  2. Remove the cilantro leaves from the stem. You'll need the leaves from 1 sprig of cilantro for each margarita.

  3. Pour the lime juice, simple syrup and the cilantro leaves into a blender and blend to combine.

  4. Combine the tequila and orange liqueur with the cilantro-lime mixture in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. For large batches, combine the ingredients in a pitcher with ice and stir well to combine.

  5. Wet the rim of a margarita, cocktail or rocks glass with a lime wedge, then dip it into salt or sugar to coat the rim.

  6. Strain the margarita into the margarita or cocktail glass, or into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a sprig of cilantro and serve immediately.
