How to Prepare a Brandy Presidential Cocktail

The presidential margarita, a real statesmanlike cocktail, also goes by the moniker "el presidente" margarita. Presidential margaritas differ from average margaritas because they contain a nip of Mexican brandy. Though the beverage's name may seem intimidating, a presidential margarita is served on the rocks and does not require any advance barware or techniques. Whip up a few presidential margaritas at your next cocktail party for both daring flavor and an added level of sophistication.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 medium-sized bread plates
  • Simple syrup
  • Kosher salt
  • Glass
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Ice
  • Tequila
  • Mexican brandy
  • Orange liqueur
  • Sweet and sour mix
  • Lime juice
  • Lime wedge or slice

Instructions

  1. Pour enough simple syrup onto one of the bread plates to thinly cover its surface. Then, cover the surface of the second plate with kosher salt.

  2. Gently place your glass upside-down into the pool of simple syrup, then place it into the kosher salt and gently rotate it to cover the rim with salt.

  3. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add 5 parts tequila, 2 parts each Mexican brandy and orange liqueur, 16 parts sweet and sour mix and a splash of lime.

  4. Firmly affix the lid to the cocktail shaker, then forcefully shake for 10 to 15 seconds.

  5. Remove the cocktail shaker lid, empty the contents into the salt-rimmed glass, then garnish with a lime wedge or slice.
