Granny Smith apples have a tart taste, making them perfect for cooking. When picking out your apples for a Granny Smith apple pie, make sure they are firm (not mushy or soft) with a clean, smooth skin. Fresh Granny Smith apples come out of Washington state during September, October and November. Making a Granny Smith apple pie does not have to be time consuming if you skip making your own crust and purchase it ready-made from the grocery store.

Gather your ingredients for a Granny Smith apple pie: pre-made pie crust (package of two), 6 cups peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples, 1½ tbsp. lemon juice, ¾ cup packed brown sugar, ¼ cup white sugar, 2 tbsp. flour, 1 tsp. cinnamon, ¼ tsp. nutmeg, 2 tbsp. butter, 2 tbsp. milk and white sugar for sprinkling over the top of the pie.
-
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F.
-
Place one of the pre-made pie crusts in the bottom of a pie plate.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the Granny Smith apples and lemon juice. Mix thoroughly.
-
Add to the mixing bowl the sugars, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix together. Transfer to pie plate, putting on top of bottom layer of pie crust.
-
Place the second pie crust on top of the apple mixture. Flute or use a fork to join the edges of both pie crusts together. Cut three slits, or other variation, into the top pie crust for steam venting.

Brush the top crust with milk. Sprinkle white sugar over the pie crust. Bake the Granny Smith apple pie in your preheated oven for 20 minutes.
