How to Add Cocoa to a Sugar Cookie Mix

A simple package of store-bought sugar cookie mix is a great base to create any kind of cookies you want quickly and easily. You can make chocolate sugar cookies by blending cocoa into the completed dough along with a little shortening to keep the dough moist and pliable. Remember to always add a small amount of liquid ingredients when you add extra dry ingredients to keep the dough from becoming crumbly and difficult to work with.

Things You'll Need

  • 17.5-oz. package of sugar cookie mix
  • Large mixing bowl
  • 2 tbsp. shortening
  • Microwave-safe cup
  • 6 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sugar cookie mix in a large mixing bowl by following the ingredients on the package. Use your hands to form an indentation in the center of the dough.

  2. Measure 2 tbsp. of shortening, and place in a microwave-safe cup or bowl. Melt the shortening in the microwave on high for approximately one minute.

  3. Stir 6 tbsp. of unsweetened cocoa powder into the melted shortening. Stir until the cocoa powder dissolves.

  4. Pour the melted shortening and cocoa into the center of the sugar cookie dough. Allow the shortening to cool until you can touch it without burning your hands.

  5. Knead the cocoa and shortening mixture into the sugar cookie dough with your hands until the dough is one uniform color.

  6. Shape and bake the cookies as directed on the sugar cookie mix packaging.
