How do I Cut Out Sugar Cookies Made With Powdered Sugar?
A good old-fashioned sugar cookie recipe that you can mix up, roll out and cut into shapes will often become a family favorite. Use cookie cutters to match the seasons or the current holiday and make cookies to fit any occasion. Try something a little different and cut out sugar cookies made with powdered sugar. You will find these cookies lighter than cookies made with granulated sugar and the dough handles easily for rolling and cutting.
Things You'll Need
- 2 cups unsalted butter (softened)
- 3 cups powdered sugar (plus additional for rolling)
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 eggs
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- Electric mixer
- Large bowl
- Spatula
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Plastic wrap
- Rolling pin
- Cookie cutters
- Baking sheets
- Cooling racks
- Decorator icing
Instructions
-
Mix the butter and the powdered sugar in the large bowl with the electric mixer. Add the vanilla and the eggs, mixing until the ingredients are creamy and light yellow in color.
-
Add the flour, baking powder and salt to the ingredients in the bowl and mix everything well with the electric mixer until the dough is stiff.
-
Wrap the cookie dough in plastic wrap. Chill it in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
-
Remove the cookie dough from the refrigerator. Sprinkle a flat work surface generously with powdered sugar to prevent the cookie dough from sticking. Roll out the cookie dough to 1/8 inch thick, adding additional powdered sugar to prevent sticking.
-
Cut out shapes with the cookie cutters, transferring each cookie shape to the baking sheets. Space the cookie shapes on the baking sheets so they do not touch.
-
Bake the cookies at 375 F for between five and eight minutes. Remove the cookies when they turn light tan in color. Cool the cookies on the sheets for five minutes and then transfer them to the cooling racks with the spatula.
-
Allow the cookies to cool for 45 minutes. Frost with decorator icing.
