How to Make Candy Kabobs

Candy kabobs on a skewer stick ignite excitement in children, while parents earn bonus points for pleasing presentation. Try these as a dessert option at a barbecue or offer them as a party favor for guests to take home. Candy with soft centers, rather than hard or nut-filled candy, work best, because the skewers slide on easily with a lower risk of crushing or breaking.

Basic Process

  • Wooden skewers come in long and short sizes, but you can cut long skewers to the desired length with scissors or a sharp knife. Push the pointed end of the skewer through the first piece of candy and slide the candy down the skewer, stopping 2 to 3 inches from the blunt end to leave a handle. Push additional pieces of candy onto the skewer, alternating shapes and colors, until you reach the tip. Clip off the sharp tip to reduce risk of injury. Place the last piece of candy on the end, pushing it halfway onto the skewer to cover the end.

Candy Combinations

  • Candy kabobs don't necessarily require any specific pattern for placing the candy, but you can use them to evoke a theme or complement the decorations at your party. For a Christmas party, alternate red and green gum drops or other candies. Alternate red candy with miniature marshmallows for a candy-cane stripe effect that works well for a Christmas or Valentine’s Day theme. Select two or three colors from any party theme and use those in your candy kabobs. Make candy kabobs that resemble meat and vegetable kabobs at a summertime barbecue. Cut colorful candy to resemble vegetable shapes. Alternate these pieces with chocolate candy squares that resemble meat on the skewer.
