How to Make Candy Cigarettes (10 Steps)
Candy cigarettes could be found in stores as far back as the 19th century. In 1970 and 1991, a ban was considered in the United States but was never passed. Today, candy cigarettes aren't as widespread as they once were, but fortunately, you can create a recipe for yourself from the comfort of your own home.
Things You'll Need
- 4 large cooked egg whites
- 2 lb. bag powdered sugar
- 12 tsp. tylose
- 4 tsp. vegetable shortening
Instructions
-
Put your cooked egg whites into a mixer bowl. Use a flat paddle and turn the mixer on its highest speed setting for about 10 to 15 seconds. This should help to break up the egg whites.
-
Place 2/3 cup of powdered sugar aside. Turn the mixture to its lowest speed setting and add the leftover sugar into the mixture. This should be done very slowly.
-
Turn up the speed to medium and let it mix for about three minutes.
-
Measure out 12 teaspoons of tylose and place it into a small separate bowl. Tylose is a gum paste powder.
-
Change the speed setting on the mixer to low. Sprinkle tylose in very quickly. Turn the speed up in order to help make the mixture thick.
-
Sprinkle the remaining powdered sugar on a counter that has been covered with wax paper.
-
Use a rubber spatula to move the mixture from the bowl onto the wax paper and powdered sugar.
-
Add shortening to your hands and knead the mixture, implementing some of the extra powdered sugar into it to form a soft dough. The dough should not be sticky. Fingers should always come out clean from the mixture.
-
Add the dough to a plastic zip bag and then place the mixture inside of a second bag. Seal the bags as airtight as possible. Place the mixture in the refrigerator for 24 hours to allow it to mature.
-
Remove the paste from the refrigerator and allow it to set and become room temperature. Take a small amount of shortening and create your candy cigarette in stick shapes. Place them on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper and place it in the freezer. Freeze for a few hours or until hardened.
