The History of the 100 Grand Candy Bar
The 100 Grand candy bar has been around for many generations. Chances are you ate it as a kid, and so did your parents. Now your kids are eating this crunchy, chewy candy. 100 Grand may not get the market appeal as other similar candy bars, but with its origin dating back to the 1960s, it has stood the test of time.
100 Grand History
-
The 100 Grand candy bar was created by Nestle in 1966 after a series of game shows, such as The $64,000 Question, Twenty One, and The Big Surprise had much success. It was The Big Surprise that offered a series of questions to its contestants that ranged in value from $100 to $100,000. It was this particular program that gave the idea to Nestle for a new candy bar--100 Grand.
What it is Made of
-
100 Grand is made of creamy milk chocolate, rich caramel and crispy rice. It is sold as one candy bar, but there are two separate pieces in the packaging. It has 190 calories, 5 g of saturated fat and 22 g of sugar.
The Cause of Many Pranks and Games
-
100 Grand has been used in many practical pranks. On more than one occasion, 100 grand has been promised by radio DJ's if a series of questions are answered correctly by their listeners. The winner expects to take home $100,000 and instead got the candy bar. In one instance, this prank ended in a law suit by a Kentucky woman in May of 2005 (see References).
The candy bar has also been used creatively, whether to ask a question or use it as a prop in a game. "You are worth a 100 Grand to me. Will you go to the Dance with me?" Or, "Your soon-to-be husband is worth this much?" A popular question that is often asked during a bridal shower game of Memory.
100 Grand and Its TV Debut
-
The 100 Grand candy bar has been the joke of many TV sitcoms over the years. In NBC's "The Office" season three, Micheal Scott uses the candy bar to provoke his co-workers, telling them that if they sell enough of the candy bar they will make $100,000. Other TV shows such as "Seinfeld" and "The Colbert Report" also have used 100 Grand to prove points or to make jokes.
100 Grand is Not Just a Candy Bar
-
100 Grand has been used in many baking recipes. Nestle puts out a free "Very Best Baking Magazine," and 100 Grand has been used as an ingredient for cookies, brownies, cheesecakes, salads and milk shakes (see References).
