How to Substitute Chocolate Chips for Baking Chocolate
Chocolate is a favorite flavor of children and adults alike, so it's no wonder homemade baked goods often contain this sweet substance in one form or another. Chocolate is available in dark, milk, white, semi-sweet and bitter varieties, so cooks often do not have every type of chocolate in the pantry. If you have a recipe that calls for baking chocolate, which is an unsweetened, bitter chocolate, and you don't happen to have this ingredient on hand, you can easily substitute chocolate chips.
Things You'll Need
- Recipe calling for baking chocolate
- 1 bag semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Supplies for preparing recipe
Instructions
-
Read thoroughly the recipe you are attempting to make. Be sure you have all ingredients besides the baking chocolate on hand.
-
Measure out 1 ounce of chocolate chips for every 1 ounce of baking chocolate the recipe calls for. This is a 1:1 substitution. If you do not have a scale, you can measure out 1/3 cup of chocolate chips to equal 2 ounces of baking chocolate.
-
Decrease the amount of sugar in the recipe you are using to account for the added sweetness in the semi-sweet chips. For every ounce of chocolate chips you added, remove 1 tablespoon of sugar from the recipe.
-
Prepare the dish according to the recipe.
