What Are the Flavors of 5 Flavors Lifesavers?

Life Savers were created in 1912 by Clarence Crane, a Cleveland, Ohio, chocolate maker. Originally released as a peppermint candy, Life Savers are now available in more than 40 flavors. Crane created Life Savers as a way to offer his customers a summer treat able to withstand hot temperatures without melting. Deviating from the usual pillow-shaped mints of the time, Live Savers got their name from their resemblance to the safety flotation device found on boats. Clarence Crane's Life Savers have since become a household name.

Orange

  • Along with lemon and lime, orange appeared in the original three-flavor fruit roll created in 1924 and the classic five-fruit roll introduced in 1935. In 2003 the flavors found in the classic five-flavor roll were altered. Blackberry initially replaced orange, but the change didn't last long and orange came back to the pack.

Pineapple

  • Pineapple joined lemon, lime and orange in the classic five-flavor roll of Life Savers candy released in 1935. In 2003 the flavors found in the classic five-flavor roll were altered, but pineapple was still included.

Cherry

  • Cherry joined pineapple and the lemon, orange and lime flavors of the original fruit roll in 1935 to create the classic five-flavor roll of Life Savers candy. In 2003 the flavors found in the classic five-flavor roll were altered, but cherry remained.

2003 Changes

  • In 2003, raspberry and watermelon became part of the five-flavor roll. Lemon and lime, original flavors that carried over into the classic five-flavor roll introduced in 1935, were both removed during the 2003 flavor changes. Thus, a five-flavor roll of Life Savers in 2011 contains pineapple, cherry, raspberry, watermelon and orange.
