How to Make Fondant Bows & Ribbons (7 Steps)
Fondant is a very thick, pliable type of icing commonly used in cake decorating. Because of its malleable nature, fondant is used to make all sorts of cake toppers, from miniature animals and people to flowers, bows and ribbons. Making a fondant bow and ribbon is fairly simple, and once the technique is grasped, any variation of style and size is easy to achieve. The best thing about working with fondant is if it doesn't work out on the first go, simply squash it up and roll it out for a second try.
Things You'll Need
- Cornstarch
- Fondant
- Rolling pin
- Ruler
- Knife
- Paper towel
Instructions
-
Sprinkle cornstarch onto a flat work surface, and roll out a sheet of fondant about 1/8 inch thick.
-
Cut 2 rectangles out of the fondant, 5 inches long by 1 inch high. This will make a 5-inch bow---to make larger or smaller bows, adjust the length and height of the rectangles.
-
Roll a piece of paper towel into a 2-inch diameter roll, wrapping 1 rectangle of fondant around the paper roll. Pinch the ends of the fondant together, and press the side of the end of the fondant inwards, forming a small pleat in the end. This is one side of the bow. Repeat with the other rectangle of fondant to make the two sides of the bow. Let the fondant set with the paper towel still inside the bows to hold them open.
-
Cut a rectangle of fondant, around 2 inches wide and 3 inches long. Fold the edges of the fondant over to give it a neat, rounded look then push the sides of the fondant together, forming a pleated piece of fondant---around 3 pleats.
-
Wrap the pleated piece of fondant around the two ends of the bow pieces, holding them together. Press at the back to make sure that the two pieces are attached to the middle covering, then trim the excess fondant of the pleated piece---this completes the fondant bow.
-
Cut 2 rectangles, 6 inches long by 1 inch high for the ribbon of the bow. Cut out an inwards-facing triangle from one end of each rectangle, forming the end of the ribbon.
-
Place the two pieces of ribbon at outward angles from one another with the flat ends of the ribbon touching in the center. Sit the fondant bow over the top of the ribbons, where the flat ends touch, and press lightly to stick the ribbons to the bottom of the bow.
