How to Decorate Cupcakes as Softballs

Cupcakes are one of the most versatile cakes. You can fill them with creams and jellies. You can slice the top off of cupcakes and pour in melted chocolate or butter cream. For cupcakes fresh out of the oven, a light sprinkling of sugar or cinnamon will add zest. To decorate cupcakes, buttercream frosting can be colored simply with food color. You can use candies, sprinkles and nuts to add texture to frosting. Since a softball is a larger and less dense version of a baseball, you can use the same decorating techniques for a softball cupcake as you would for a baseball cupcake.

Things You'll Need

Two dozen cupcakes
Buttercream frosting
Dark red gel-paste food coloring

Pastry bag (No. 3)
White nonpareils
Offset spatula

Instructions

Spread a thick layer of buttercream frosting over each cupcake with an offset spatula or a spatula with a narrow metal blade.
Pour the round white candy sprinkles (nonpareils) into a small bowl.
Dip the cupcakes, one by one, in the sprinkles. Roll each one around to completely cover the top of the cupcake. The sprinkles will add the bumpiness of a softball skin to the cupcake’s texture.
Add the dark red food color to one cup of buttercream frosting. Stir until the frosting is bright red.
Spoon the bright red frosting into the pastry bag with a small plain tip.
Pipe two red arced lines onto the cupcake. The lines should face in the opposite direction like the seams of a softball.
Pipe small and short red lines that cut across the arced lines. The short lines should be spaced at regular intervals, resembling the stitches of a softball.
