How to Get Ice Cream Cakes Out of the Pan (3 Steps)

Ice cream cakes can be labor-intensive enough without having to worry about chiseling it out of the cake pan as party guests await. In fact, your first step when making one of these crowd-pleasing desserts should be preparing your pan so that removal is a snap. In a pinch, a little warm water may do the trick -- but tread carefully, as too much heat will leave you with a sticky mess.

Things You'll Need

  • Wax paper, parchment paper, plastic wrap or aluminum foil
  • Springform pan (optional)

Instructions

  1. Line the inside of your cake pan with wax paper, parchment paper, plastic wrap or aluminum foil, leaving an inch or two of overhang on all sides. If using a round cake pan, plastic wrap is best as it can mold to the shape of the pan more easily. Using a springform pan will make removal of the ice cream cake even easier, but be sure to line it with plastic wrap as well.

  2. Build your cake inside the lined cake pan. Cakes with a bottom crust, such as cookie crumb, are easier to remove from the pan as they provide a solid foundation and stability for the other layers. Keep the cake in the freezer until ready to serve.

  3. When you're ready to remove the cake, simply grasp two sides of the liner and lift the cake out of the pan. If using a springform pan, release and remove the ring.
