How to Seed Pomegranates (9 Steps)

Pomegranates are ruby red fruits with a spiky crown on top, and they're filled with small juice-filled sacs surrounding edible seeds. These sacs, called arils, are the bright red jewels of this fruit and can be used in recipes or as a garnish. The only caveat to eating pomegranates is removing the arils without staining your hands and clothing with their juice. Avoid this problem by using bowl of water and colander to seed them.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp knife
  • Bowl
  • Colander

Instructions

  1. Select a bright red pomegranates that seems heavy for its size.

  2. Cut the top crown off the pomegranate.

  3. Slice the pomegranate in half lengthwise.

  4. Split each half to produce four wedges.

  5. Fill a bowl with water, and hold a pomegranate wedge underwater while you pull the arils off the white membrane of the fruit with your fingers.

  6. Repeat with all of the pomegranate wedges.

  7. Pull out any skin or white membranes from the bowl floating on top. Discard these, leaving behind a bowl of water with the pomegranate arils at the bottom.

  8. Pour the bowl of water through a colander to strain the water from the arils.

  9. Toss the arils onto a salad in place of croutons or use them as a garnish for main entrees. Eat the arils whole, including the seeds.
