How to Flavor Sugar
Skip the artificially flavored baking sugars. Make your own at home with ingredients you like such as granulated sugar substitute or edible flowers. Flavored sugar is like a homemade extract, you cannot make it overnight. You must allow at least 2 weeks for the sugar to absorb the flavor from the ingredients added to it. Use the flavored sugar to replace an equal amount of white sugar in any recipe you want to add both sweetness and flavor.
Things You'll Need
- 2 tbsp. whole spices (vanilla beans, cinnamon stick, whole cloves, star anise, lavender flowers, rose petals or nutmeg)
- 2 cups sugar
- Airtight container
Instructions
-
Combine sugar with desired spices in an airtight container.
-
Seal the container and store in a cool, dry place for at least 2 weeks.
-
Shake the container daily to distribute the flavor throughout the sugar.
-
Remove the whole spices from the sugar when you can no longer smell them, and replace with fresh spices.
-
Refill the container with plain white sugar each time you remove some flavored sugar. This will ensure you never run out of flavored sugar. For instance, if you use 1 cup of flavored sugar in a recipe, add 1 cup unflavored sugar back into the flavored sugar container to become infused with flavor.
