How to Freeze-Dry Cranberries (7 Steps)
Most fruits can be freeze-dried. Small ones like cranberries are especially good for freeze-drying. One of the reasons for using this method is to increase storage time or the shelf life of foods. Freeze-dried cranberries can last for several months and then be used in cereals, jams, preserves or as a snack. Freezing at home is a simple, but time consuming, process.
Things You'll Need
- Paper towels
- Mesh tray or cookie sheet
- Zipper lock plastic freezer bags
Instructions
-
Pick cranberries as fresh as possible. Choose plump cranberries with good coloring. Discard any bruised or moldy berries.
-
Wash the cranberries in very cold water.
-
Dry the berries with paper towels.
-
Place the cranberries on a mesh, flat tray in one layer. The mesh helps the air to circulate and reduces freezing time. A cookie sheet is another option, but freezing takes longer.
-
Put the tray of cranberries on a flat surface in the freezer. Leave in the freezer for about a week.
-
Store the cranberries in polythene freezer bags with zipper lock seals. Remove as much air from the bags as possible before sealing. One way to reduce the amount of air in the bag is to place the end of a straw in the bag and suck the air out before sealing it.
-
Use the cranberries within eight months.
