How to Tell If Brussels Sprouts Are Moldy (5 Steps)
Brussels sprouts have been eaten for centuries and become a staple during holiday meals, from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Brussels sprouts are a small form of cabbage and have a characteristically bitter taste to them. However, they are also nutritional powerhouses with a high amount of vitamin A, C, E and sulforaphane. Also containing several minerals, the sprouts are usually eaten fresh and kept refrigerated until use. However, determining whether the sprouts have become moldy is important before using them in dishes.

Smell the sprouts to see if they smell foul. If they have a moldy smell or a scent anything other than slightly earthy or fresh, they are bad.

Feel the outside of the sprouts to determine whether they are slimy. If they are slimy or depressed in any areas, they are beginning to turn moldy and should be discarded right away.

Examine the outside leaves of the sprouts. Discoloration or small fuzzy mold indicates mold growth throughout the sprout and they should be discarded right away.

Look at the bottom stem of the sprouts. If it is black or brown in color, discard the sprouts as they are likely beginning to mold.

Feel for a grayish powder over the sprouts which can indicate a downy mildew which is caused by fungus and turns in to mold. Discard them immediately if it is found.
