How to Season Cast Iron Cookware: A Step-by-Step Guide
Seasoning cast iron cookware is essential for creating a non-stick surface and protecting it from rust. Here's a simple and effective method:
1. Clean the Cast Iron:
* Wash the new cast iron skillet with hot soapy water. Use a non-abrasive sponge or scrub brush to remove any residue or manufacturing oils.
* Rinse thoroughly and dry completely with a clean towel.
2. Apply a Thin Coat of Oil:
* Use a high-smoke point oil like flaxseed, grapeseed, or canola oil. Avoid olive oil as it has a low smoke point and can lead to a sticky finish.
* Apply a thin, even layer of oil to the entire surface of the skillet, including the bottom, sides, and handle (if it's made of cast iron).
* Wipe off excess oil with a paper towel.
3. Preheat the Oven:
* Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
4. Bake the Skillet:
* Place the oiled skillet upside down on a baking sheet in the oven.
* Bake for 1 hour.
5. Cool and Repeat:
* Allow the skillet to cool completely in the oven.
* Repeat steps 2-4 at least one more time, and even a third time for a more robust seasoning layer.
Important Notes:
* Don't use soap to clean your seasoned cast iron skillet! Simply scrub with a brush and hot water.
* A well-seasoned skillet should have a smooth, dark, and slightly sticky finish.
* If your seasoning starts to chip or flake, you can simply re-season it with the same method.
Additional Tips:
* Use a clean towel or paper towel to apply the oil. Avoid using a cloth that has been used to clean other surfaces.
* Don't over-oil the skillet. A thin layer is all you need.
* You can also season your cast iron skillet on the stovetop. Simply place it over medium heat and let it heat up until the oil starts to smoke. Then, wipe off the excess oil and let it cool.
With proper care and seasoning, your cast iron cookware will last a lifetime and become a prized kitchen tool.
