How to Use Clip-Top Preserving Jars (6 Steps)

Clip-top preserving jars are a popular choice for making preserves. The reusable glass jars are easy to work with and are very resilient, holding up from season to season. By following some simple preparation techniques and properly caring for these jars, they can last for many years.

Things You'll Need

  • Preserving jars
  • Warm water
  • Soap
  • Clean cloth
  • Metal pot with lid
  • Rubber-tipped tongs
  • Large bowl

Instructions

  1. Open the top of the jar by lifting up the metal clip and flipping the lid over. Remove the rubber rings from the lid of the jar. Clean the jar and the rings with warm, soapy water and a clean cloth. Place the pieces on a drying rack and allow to air dry or wipe dry with a clean cloth.

  2. Fill a large metal pot with water and place the jar inside of the pot. Hold the jar down in the water and allow the water to seep into the jar until the weight of the water prevents the jar from rising to the top of the pot. Drop the rubber rings in the pot. Add additional jars, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Jars should not come into contact with each other.

  3. Bring the water to a boil and place a tight-fitting lid on top of the pot. Boil for 30 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and remove the cover from the pot.

  4. Insert one tip of the rubber-tipped tongs into the jar and the other tip on the outside of the jar. Grasp the jar firmly and lift the jar slightly from the water, making sure you have a firm hold on the jar. Continue to lift the jar until it is completely out of the water. Tilt the jar so that the water drains from the jar. Hold in place for a few seconds until there are no more drips of water falling off the jar.

  5. Hold the tongs tightly and carefully set the jar upright on a clean, dry surface. Use the tongs to transfer the rubber rings to the dry surface. Allow the jars and rings to air dry completely for several hours or overnight.

  6. Place the rubber rings in a bowl of cold water and allow to soak for 30 minutes. Remove the rings from the bowl and allow them to air dry before using.
