How to Cook With Soda
Soda is a refreshing beverage on a hot summer day, but also makes a perfect ingredient for many of your traditional recipes. The carbonation of soda helps to tenderize meats and can add a slightly sweet and unique flavor to your old favorites. While there are number of recipes that can be improved with a splash of soda, a few simple tips can get you started with a new zesty addition in the kitchen.
Instructions
-
Pour half a can of clear soda into a glass or drink, filling the rest of the can with your favorite marinade, such as teriyaki or barbecue sauce. Place a whole chicken upright over the can, place in a baking dish and bake as you normally would, can and all. Once fully cooked, remove the can and pour the sauce over the chicken. The soda will tenderize your chicken and make a delicious marinade.
-
Liven up your slow-cooker ham with a splash of soda. Follow your usual slow cooker recipe, but instead of adding water, pineapple juice or other liquid, use a clear or caramelized soda and cook as usual. The soda will penetrate deep into the ham, resulting in a juicy tender ham with a delicate sweet flavor without a strong soda taste. You can use the juice as a marinade or enjoy the ham as is.
-
Make a mouthwatering melt-in-your-mouth pot roast by adding equal parts of caramelized soda and chili sauce to your baking pan. Cover your pot roast with tin foil and baste the meat with the chili sauce and soda mixture every 20 minutes for a tender delectable pot roast.
-
Create a unique and flavorful desert by slow cooking pears or apples covered with clear soda. For extra flavor you might add vanilla, cherries or use a natural fruit flavored soda. This caramelized fruit desert will have all of your guests begging for the recipe.
-
Add a splash of caramelized soda to your spaghetti sauce for a new twist to an old favorite. Soda will help to bring out the natural flavors of your sauce, while adding a subtle sweet flavor.
