How to Cook With Sour Cream

Sour cream is a wonderful addition to all manner of recipes, from simple sauces to baked goods. It also makes a great topping for cooked foods. Regardless of how you use it, cooking with sour cream can only improve the taste and texture of your dishes by lending its zesty, tangy flavor to the food.

Instructions

  1. Use sour cream as a substitute for milk in recipes for baked goods to add richness. Substitute approximately half of the ingredient for sour cream. For example, if a recipe calls for 1 cup of milk, you can substitute this with ½ cup milk and ½ cup sour cream.

  2. Add sour cream to sauces and soups for additional creaminess. It can be substituted for milk or used in addition to other dairy ingredients. A general rule is to use 1 tbsp. of sour cream for each cup of milk, if using to increase thickness. Add the sour cream at the end of cooking, as boiling or overheating will cause thinning and curdling.

  3. Add sour cream to condensed soups to prevent separation and to increase the creaminess and thickness. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons per can of soup, mix well and use the soup as usual in recipes. This method is particularly useful in casseroles of all kinds that require the use of condensed soups.

  4. Use sour cream to make dips, dressings and spreads. For recipes that require milk or buttermilk, substitute some or all for sour cream, or add a few tablespoons to improve texture.

  5. Add sour cream as a topping to spicy dishes, baked potatoes, casseroles and soups. Place a dollop on top of any of your favorite foods, although sour cream best compliments spicy foods, such as Mexican and Indian.
