How to Filter Frying Oil

Cooking oil can be filtered and reused. Using recycled cooking oil will save money and save you some trips to the store. It is easy and safe to filter used cooking oil as long as you follow proper safety precautions. Almost all frying oils can be recycled.

Things You'll Need

  • Coffee filter
  • Jar with lid
  • Paper towel
  • Rubber band
  • Spoon

Filtering Frying Oil

  1. Allow the cooking oil to cool completely before separating food particles from the oil. Hot oil can cause severe burns and can make storage containers melt or burst, depending on the materials from which they are made.

  2. Place a coffee filter on top of the jar. Slide a rubber band around the mouth of the jar and secure the filter to the jar. Make sure that the filter is not tight across the top. Keep the filter loose in the middle so that it hangs down into the jar.

  3. Slowly pour the oil through the filter. If the oil begins to accumulate, allow it to filter completely before adding more oil. If necessary, use a spoon to remove excess food from the filter before continuing the straining process.

  4. Carefully remove the rubber band from the jar's mouth. Keep one hand on the filter to prevent it from slipping. Remove the filter and discard the debris.

  5. Wipe the top of the jar with a paper towel. Remove excess oil from the jar. Oil residue can cause the lid to stick to the jar and prevent proper sealing. Seal the jar tightly; store the oil in a cool place. Do not store the oil on a stove.
