Drying Food in a Vacuum Desiccator
Food drying can produce all kinds of edibles, from dried fruit to meat jerky, and save you money in the process. Making these foods at home is easy and can be cost-effective, but food dehydrators need maintenance, break down from time to time and can end up costing more in the long run. Vacuum desiccators can be a less expensive, less complicated alternative to food dehydrators and can produce good results if used properly.
Things You'll Need
- Plate
- Wax paper
Instructions
-
Cover the surface of a plate with wax paper. This will help the moisture evaporate from the food and prevent it from sticking to the surface of the plate. Make sure the plate can fit inside the vacuum desiccator.
-
Place the food to be dried on the wax paper.
-
Remove the vacuum desiccator lid and place the plate inside. Several plates of food may be dried at a time, but this may increase drying time.
-
Close the lid and activate the food desiccator. Food desiccators can work much faster than food dehydrators, so the food should be thoroughly dried overnight or in less time.
