The Best Ways to Make Wild Rice
Wild rice, which is native to North America, is high in protein and low in fat according to Purdue University. Interestingly, wild rice is not a true rice; it is a water-grass seed. There are several ways to prepare wild rice, such as cooking it on a stove top, in a microwave or in an oven. You can add nutty-tasting wild rice to a variety of your favorite recipes, including soups, stuffing and stews.
Stove Top
-
Preparing wild rice on a stove top is a common method of cooking the grain. Rinse one cup of wild rice in water and add it to three cups of boiling water in a saucepan. Cover the pan and simmer the rice for one hour or until it is tender. Drain any water from the pan and season the rice with salt, pepper and butter to taste. Fluff the rice with a fork prior to serving it.
Microwave
-
Wild rice can take a while to cook, so prepare it in your microwave if you're short on time. Place one cup of rinsed wild rice in a microwave-safe bowl and add three cups of water. Stir the mixture well and microwave it on high power for five minutes, then cook the wild rice on a medium setting, such as 50 percent power, for 30 minutes or until it is tender and fluffs easily with a fork.
Oven
-
Cooking the wild rice in an oven along with added liquid will yield a tender, moist dish. For added flavor, bake the rice in vegetable, chicken or beef broth instead of water. Pour one cup of rinsed wild rice into a 2-qt. casserole dish along with two cups of water or broth. Stir the mixture well and cover the dish. Bake the wild rice for one hour at 350 degrees F or until tender.
Slow Cooker
-
To create a tasty, one-pot meal, prepare wild rice in a slow cooker. Place 1 1/2 cups of rinsed wild rice in a 2-qt slow cooker, along with two 14-oz. cans of any flavor broth, 1 tbsp. of butter and salt and pepper to taste. You can add other ingredients, such as cranberries, fresh vegetables or almonds, either before or after the cooking process to enhance the texture and flavor of the wild rice dish. Combine all of the ingredients and cover the slow cooker. Set the slow cooker on low and cook the rice for four to five hours.
