How to Measure 25 Grams of Dry Yeast (3 Steps)

Grams of dry yeast are typically measured with a food scale, but many common food scales have a 1-gram resolution, which means a 25-percent error margin when measuring. This margin of error isn't a big deal when measuring heavy food such as meat or when you need a pound of sugar, but makes a big difference when you only need 25 grams of dry yeast. Instead, you can convert the needed weight in teaspoons to achieve a precise measurement. This method is also helpful if you don't want to commit to purchasing a kitchen scale.

Things You'll Need

  • Calculator
  • 1-teaspoon measuring spoon
  • 1/4-teaspoon measuring spoon
  • Kitchen scale

Instructions

  1. Divide 25 by 3.1 -- the number of grams of dry yeast in 1 teaspoon -- to find the total number of teaspoons needed to equal 25 grams. The answer is 8.03, which means you need 8 teaspoons of dry yeast to equal 25 grams.

  2. Scoop out the dry yeast with a 1-teaspoon measuring spoon. Rest the back side of a butter knife on top of the spoon and scrape it along the spoon to level off the top so you have exactly 1 teaspoon of yeast. Repeat this seven more times for a total of 8 teaspoons.

  3. Calibrate your food scale so it's set to zero before adding anything to the scale. Place the measured 8 teaspoons of dry yeast on the scale and record its weight. The difference in the scale reading indicates your scales margin of error, which makes it easier for you to measure in the future.
