How to Fry Wonton Wraps (4 Steps)
Although wonton wrappers are normally filled with morsels of various meats and vegetables, they make a tasty snack fried up on their own. Wonton wrappers, available in many grocery stores, are commonly used in Asian cooking for all types of wontons, whether steamed, pan-fried or deep-fried. Made from a mixture of flour, eggs and water and rolled out thinly, it's their shape and thinness that make them ideal as crunchy, delicate chips. After giving them a quick hot oil bath, season them lightly with salt and enjoy with a sweet and sour dipping sauce.
Things You'll Need
- Saucepan
- Vegetable or peanut oil
- Candy thermometer
- Salt
- Slotted spoon
- Paper towels
Instructions
-
Defrost wonton wrappers in the refrigerator if they are frozen, several hours before you're ready to cook them.
-
Fill a deep saucepan about halfway with vegetable or peanut oil and bring a to a temperature of about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a candy thermometer to get an accurate read of the temperature.
-
Add the wonton wrappers to the hot oil, a few at a time, so you don't overcrowd them and fry for about 20 to 30 seconds, until they turn golden brown.
-
Remove the fried wontons from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels. Work quickly, as they are thin and will burn easily. Sprinkle lightly with salt and enjoy while they're still warm.
