How do you know if scones are cooked?
To tell if scones are done baking, look for the following signs:
- Golden-brown color: Scones should have a golden-brown crust on the outside when they are done baking. If they are still pale, put them back in the oven for a few more minutes.
- Firm to the touch: Scones should be firm to the touch when they are done. If they are still soft and doughy, they need to bake for a little longer.
- A toothpick inserted into the center of the scone should come out clean. If the toothpick has any dough on it, the scones need to bake for a few more minutes.
- They don't seem heavy. When scones are raw or underbaked, they feel doughy and a bit heavy. As the scone cooks, it will become much lighter.
- Check the bottom. You should see even golden-browning on the bottom.
_Be careful not to overbake scones, as this can make them dry and crumbly. If you are unsure whether or not scones are done, it is best to err on the side of caution and take them out of the oven a little early._
