How to Substitute Black Strap Molasses for Light Molasses
When a recipe calls for light molasses but you only have black strap molasses, most cooks might abandon the recipe in fear that the black strap molasses is too strong. While it is true that black strap molasses is much bolder than light molasses, it is possible to substitute black strap molasses for light molasses if you follow a simple procedure to dilute the strength of the molasses.
Things You'll Need
- Black strap molasses
- Light corn syrup
- Measuring cup
Instructions
-
Determine how much light molasses the recipe requires. Divide this measurement in half. For example, if the recipe calls for 1 cup of light molasses, divide this in half to 1/2 cup.
-
Measure black strap molasses in the amount you figured in step one (1/2 cup for this example). Add this to the ingredients you are mixing.
-
Measure light corn syrup in the amount you figured in step one (again, 1/2 cup for this example). Add the light corn syrup to the ingredients.
-
Continue making the recipe according to the instructions. The corn syrup will be light enough to balance the boldness of the black strap molasses.
